Sleepless Links #1

Welcome to Sleepless Links! From time to time I’ll share a curated set of links to blogs, news stories, product information, etc. that have caught my attention. I find that it’s useful to provide the links with a small amount of context so that you, the reader, don’t have to blindly click the link without knowing why I found it interesting.

Below is the curated list for the week ending February 13th, 2022:

For anyone who has been working to integrate OKRs into their organization’s way of working, in A Guide to OKRs and Overcoming the Pain of Them Jennifer Riggins does a great job providing an overview as well as tips on how to get started.

From the Farnam Street blog, a good reminder on the compounding effect of consistency - The Small Steps of Giant Leaps.

I’ve been a huge fan of Rands (Michael Lopp IRL) for over a decade, and his latest on What We Lost doesn’t disappoint. It hits close to home for those of us who have been working 100% remotely for last 2+ years.

Subbu Allamaraju makes some great points about paying attention to ourselves a bit more for the benefit of those we lead in his post about Managing Yourself.

Former Amazonian and current Oracle Cloud VP Salman Paracha makes some interesting points about the 6-pager writing culture at Amazon in his post The perils of a writing culture — the Amazon hammer to decision making.

Having had to deal with a pretty major incident/outage recently, this post about What we talk about when we talk about ‘root cause’ by John Allspaw was very timely.

The last three links are all related to “crypto”. I scare-quote “crypto” on purpose since it’s a very active topic at the moment with strong voices and opinions both pro and con. I don’t have a strong opinion yet myself, but it seems to me that there are more smart people that I respect on the side of urging skepticism and caution.

The first link is text version of a lecture by David Rosenthal given as part of Stanford’s EE380. I find it difficult to really disagree with his key points.

The second two links are from Molly White, regarding Anonymous Crypto Wallets and Cryptocurrency Offramps.

Until next time, happy reading!
