Welcome to Sleepless Links! From time to time I’ll share a curated set of links to blogs, news stories, product information, etc. that have caught my attention. I find that it’s useful to provide the links with a small amount of context so that you, the reader, don’t have to blindly click the link without knowing why I found it interesting.
Below is the curated list for the week ending February 20th, 2022:
Build vs. Buy has always been a contentious topic, and Matt Asay bring some ammo to the Buy side in Think you can out-cloud the cloud?
Another “crypto” post, this time from Mikey Dickerson: NFTs aren’t as stupid as you think.
Do you ever deploy on Fridays? Jason Fried provides some excellent reasons why you never should in his post Watch out for 12-day weeks.
David Linthicum has some good advice about 3 cloud architecture patterns that optimize scalability and cost.
Jan Howells brings up some important points for those of us who manage environments that include OT in her post With attacks on critical infrastructure on the rise, OT security needs a rethink.
That Wild Ask A Manager Story by Jacob Kaplan-Moss describes a situation that I think we’ll see more often with the broader transition to fully remote work. I’ve actually experienced a similar situation, but the charade was discovered during the interview process.
Ostensibly a post about the energy efficiency benefits of using Rust for your projects, this post regarding Sustainability with Rust also hits on some interesting points about sustainability and technology power consumption in general. A key quote: “Renewables should not replace energy efficiency as a design principle.”
Servant leadership has never been more relevant, and this short post on the Chief Learning Officer blog about why Now is the time for servant leadership covers the topic really well.
The transition from being a technical individual contributor to leading people is a tough one. It’s something I’ve struggled with throughout my career, and this Harvard Business Review post on how to Transform Your Technical Expertise into Leadership hits on some key points that are worth reinforcing no matter how long you’ve been in a leadership role (note: may require subscription).
If you’re a GCP customer you’ll find this new Google Cloud architecture diagramming tool super handy.
Last but not least, a fun one. John Paul Jones teamed up with Playing for Change and did a remake of the Led Zeppelin classic When The Levee Breaks. Put on your headphones and crank it up. It’s awesome.
That’s all for this week - enjoy!
